A star-studded crime thriller is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

It’s got Brolin, Gosling, Nolte, Penn and Stone.

It’s Wednesday.

We are at that halfway point in the week, inching ever closer to the weekend.

To make the time fly faster, why not check out one of these fine flicks airing on telly this evening?

Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery – Comedy Central – 8pm

Groovy, baby!

Alita: Battle Angel – Film4 – 9pm

If you missed this underappreciated sci-fi blockbuster on telly after we recommended it last week, you have another chance to check it out.

Ronin – ITV4 – 9pm

Robert De Niro stars in this taut ’90s action thriller that boasts one of cinema’s best car chases.

From Dusk Till Dawn – Turner Classic Movies – 9pm

Meanwhile, this horror western features one of cinema’s best mid-movie twists.

Das Boot – Great! Movies Classic – 9pm

This acclaimed submarine-set German war film holds a 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Burning – Horror Channel – 9pm

This ’80s slasher flick set at a summer camp is a cult favourite among horror fans.

Lethal Weapon – Turner Classic Movies – 11.15pm

An absolute classic in the buddy cop action film sub-genre, why not take JOE’s recent Lethal Weapon quiz we put together to mark its 35th anniversary.

Trainspotting – Film4 – 11.25pm

Choose life.

Gangster Squad – ITV4 – 11.30pm

Our pick for tonight centres on a group of cops in ’40s Los Angeles who are assembled by a sergeant (Josh Brolin) to take down gangster Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn).

While Gangster Squad lacks the narrative scope and substance of similar period crime thriller epics like The Untouchables or Public Enemies, it’s glossy recreation of the past and a handful of action packed set-pieces make it worth a look for fans of the genre.

It’s also got a stellar cast including – on top of Brolin and Penn – Anthony Mackie, Emma Stone, Nick Nolte, Robert Patrick and Ryan Gosling to name but a few.

Back to Bataan – Great! Movies Classic – 11.55pm

John Wayne and Anthony Quinn star in this war film from the ’40s.
