An incredible war epic is among the movies on TV tonight

Rory Cashin

1917

Your mid-week movie menu has just arrived! Hooray!

Happy Wednesday, JOE readers! We want to reward you on your three-day achievement with this very lovely list of movies for you to watch on your telly this evening…

Collateral Damage – ITV4 – 9pm
Arnie stars in this dark action thriller about a grieving man who sets out to get revenge on the terrorist cell that killed his wife and child during an attack in America.

The Fourth Protocol – Legend – 9pm
A British spy (Michael Caine) must try to stop a genius Russian agent (Pierce Brosnan) from setting off a series of bombs across London. A decent thriller, and fun to see Brosnan as the bad guy before he took over as the biggest spy in the world.

Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation – FilmFour – 9pm
Speaking of spies, Tom Cruise goes all out on the stunts in this one, kicking off by being strapped to the outside of a plane, before embarking on a nail-biting car-and-then-motorcycle chase.

1917 – BBC One – 10.40pm

Our big pick for tonight is 1917, an epic WWI movie from director Sam Mendes (Skyfall, Road To Perdition). It tells the story of two soldiers (George MacKay and Dean-Charles Chapman) who are sent across war-torn France to deliver a vital message that could help save thousands of lives. If you miss it tonight, 1917 is also available to rent on Apple TV and Google Play.

King Lear – BBC Four – 10.45pm
Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson, Florence Pugh, Jim Broadbent, Emily Watson and Andrew Scott star in this well-reviewed adaptation of Shakespeare’s classic, here reset to a highly militarised 21st century London.

Assassin’s Creed – FilmFour – 11.40pm}
This SHOULD have been great, with Michael Fassbender and Marion Cotillard starring in a big budget adaptation of a much-loved video game with a very good director behind the helm. Instead, this might arguably be the most boring video game adaptation we’ve got so far.
