A total hidden gem is among the movies on TV tonight

Rory Cashin

The Adjustment Bureau

It was released in cinema in 2011 and barely anyone went to see it!

If you’ve already caught up with Netflix’s addition of one of the best revenge movies of recent years (more on that here), then maybe you’ll want to check out some of the movies on TV this evening…

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire – ITV2 – 5.50pm

The fourth one. The one with Robert Pattinson. One of the best ones.

Skyscraper – FilmFour – 7.10pm

The Rock tries to get his own version of Die Hard. It’s fun but dumb.

Casino Royale – ITV4 – 8pm

Daniel Craig’s first outing as 007 is brutal and gritty, arguably the best of his outings.

Gentlemen Prefer Blondes – BBC Four – 9pm

A musical comedy about a dancer (Marilyn Monroe) who goes on a trip to Paris before her wedding, only for her future father-in-law to send a private detective to follow her. It has Monroe performing the iconic ‘Diamonds Are A Girl’s Best Friend’.

Good Boys – FilmFour – 9pm

A pretty decent comedy about a trio of 12-year-old friends who are freaking themselves out over their impending first kisses.

Anon – Sky Sci-Fi – 9pm

The minds behind The Truman Show bring us this dark sci-fi thriller with Clive Owen and Amanda Seyfried caught up in a memory-frazzling conspiracy. It is… actually quite bad, but here are Owen and writer/director Andrew Niccol talking about the movie:

The Adjustment Bureau – RTÉ2 – 9pm

Our pick for the night is The Adjustment Bureau, which features the combo of Matt Damon and Emily Blunt a full 12 years before Oppenheimer. Based on a story from the author of Blade Runner and Total Recall, it sees a Congressman (Damon) fall in love with a dancer (Blunt), only for a group of shady individuals to try to keep them apart… but won’t reveal to them why. A very entertaining and thoughtfully emotional thriller, the supporting cast is also absolutely stacked: Anthony Mackie, John Slattery, Michael Kelly, Terence Stamp, Pedro Pascal, Jennifer Ehle.

The Adjustment Bureau is also available to rent at home on Rakuten TV, Google Play and the Sky Store.

Brief Encounter – BBC Four – 10.30pm

David Lean’s gorgeous romantic drama, detailing the progressing relationship between bored housewife (Celia Johnson) and the new doctor in town (Trevor Howard).

Mean Girls – FilmFour – 10.45pm

“I saw Cady Heron wearing army pants and flip flops, so I bought army pants and flip flops.”

Gran Torino – ITV4 – 10.50pm

Clint Eastwood’s weirdly loved drama about an old racist who slowly befriends his Asian teenage neighbour.

Schindler’s List – BBC One – 11.10pm

Spielberg’s epic WWII drama detailing how a single man (played by Liam Neeson) helped save over 1,000 Jewish people from the concentration camps.

Kidnapped: Saving My Daughter – Virgin Media Three – 12.10am

One of those made-for-TV movies that look like they were made on the sets of American soaps during their days off.

The Handmaiden – FilmFour – 12.40am

A brilliant psychological erotic thriller about a rich Japanese woman, her new handmaiden, and a con man trying to cheat her out of her wealth.

Secrets That Kill – Virgin Media One – 1am

Hilariously bad title aside, this is another made-for-TV movie that you should probably avoid.

Breaking In – Channel 4 – 2.05am

Gabrielle Union headlines this home invasion thriller. 27% on Rotten Tomatoes is pretty accurate.
