Movies & TV

07th Jul 2023

Arguably Tom Hanks’ best performance is among the movies on TV tonight

Rory Cashin

Captain Phillips

Some great movies on TV to choose from this evening!

Prime Video has just added an entire series of a new horror show with some great reviews (more on that here), but if you’re more in a movie mood this evening, here are the choices for your Friday evening:

Sahara – FilmFour – 6.25pm

Matthew McConaughey and Penelope Cruz headline this modern day rip-off of Indiana Jones. It isn’t great, but it passes the time.

Twilight – Sky Showcase – 6.45pm

The first in the romance series about a teenage girl who falls in love with a (checks notes) 104-year-old vampire. Not cool.

Legally Blonde – RTÉ 2 – 9pm

Reece Witherspoon is perfect in this comedy about a girl heading to Harvard to follow the man she loves, but discovers her own self-worth along the way.

Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation – FilmFour – 9pm

The one that kicks off with Tom Cruise on the outside of a plane as it takes off. A good time to catch up on all of these, as the brilliant new addition arrives in cinemas on Monday. Check out our interviews with some of the cast right here.

Deadpool 2 – E4 – 9pm

Not as good as the first one, but probably worth checking out ahead of the threequel, which will also bring back Hugh Jackman as Wolverine, due to arrive in cinemas in May 2024.

PS I Love You – BBC Three – 9pm

This beloved rom-com turned 15 years old earlier this year, and we asked Gerard Butler about his memories of working on the movie:

Captain Phillips – RTÉ One – 9.35pm

Our main pick for the night is the movie that really should have won Tom Hanks his third Oscar, but he wasn’t even nominated for this true-life thriller from the director of the best Bourne movies. Hanks plays Captain Phillips, the leader of a commercial vessel which is suddenly taken over by Somali pirates, and he must walk the tightrope between keeping himself and his crew alive, while also staying on his new kidnappers’ good side.

Jackass 2.5 – Comedy Central – 10pm

Men hurting themselves for our entertainment, added bits that didn’t make the cinema edit.

Thelma & Louise – BBC One – 10.40pm

Ridley Scott’s brilliant road trip drama about two best friends (Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon) forced to go on the run after they commit a murder.

Van Wilder: Party Liaison – MTV – 11pm

The second Ryan Reynolds movie on TV tonight, this time as his college’s vibe commissioner, but forced to suddenly buckle down and graduate when his rich parents threaten to pull funding.

The Equalizer – FilmFour – 11.40pm

Denzel Washington does a Taken. Its pretty good.

Girl With A Pearl Earring – RTÉ – 12.05am

Colin Firth, Scarlett Johansson and Cillian Murphy star in this biopic of the titular famous painting and its creator. Great performances, beautiful cinematography, but all a bit too slow burn for our liking.

Charlie’s Angels – Channel 4 – 12.10am

“Lucy Liu. With my girl Drew. Cameron D and Destiny.” Still a tune.

Bring It On – Comedy Central – 12.30am

Kirsten Dunst’s much-loved cheerleader comedy is ranked alongside Mean Girls and Easy A as one of the best teen movies of all time.
