One of the best dramas of the 2010s is among the movies on TV tonight

Rory Cashin

A really great mix on tonight, if we do say so ourselves…

If you’re looking for some viewing inspiration, we’ve put together this list of 100 movies that are all under 100 minutes long.

But if you’ve got room in your life for something a bit longer, then some of the movies on TV tonight are legitimately fantastic.

My Cousin Rachel – Film4 – 6.50pm

A period romantic drama, set around an investigation into a murder, and the likely killer seducing everyone she comes into contact with. Rachel Weisz, Sam Claflin and Holliday Grainger star.

Swordfish – TCM – 9pm

John Travolta and Hugh Jackman star in one of the most ridiculous action thrillers of the last few decades. Something to do with hacking a bank? Never mind, just watch the ‘splosions.

Coming to America – Film4 – 9pm

Eddie Murphy plays many, many different characters in the landmark comedy.

First Reformed – TG4 – 9.30pm

Our pick of the night is this 2017 drama from the writer of Taxi Driver.

It stars Ethan Hawke in career-best form as the pastor of a quiet church in upstate New York whose life begins to spiral out of the control following an encounter with an environmental activist (Philip Ettinger) and his pregnant wife (Amanda Seyfried).

The movie tackles some VERY heavy issues, but is packed with some incredible performances. It was pretty much completely overlooked upon cinema release, so now is your time to catch up on one of the best dramas of recent years.

Aliens – BBC Four – 10pm

This writer’s favourite movie of all time. So… there’s that.

Moonlight – BBC Two – 11.15pm

Oscar-winning powerful drama about a young man coming to terms with his sexuality through three different stages in his life.

What Men Want – Film4 – 11.20pm

The gender-flipped remake of the Mel Gibson “classic” comedy, this has Taraji P. Henson able to hear the thoughts of the men around her. It’s… fine.

Animals – Film4 – 1.20am

Two best friends who like nothing more than partying around Dublin find themselves drifting apart when one of them gets engaged. A very good comedy-drama.
