DiCaprio's only Oscar win is among the movies on TV tonight
Let the weekend begin... with some great movies!
Friday is here and we need something to help us get into the weekend'y mood. Here are the some great movies for you to check out on the TV tonight... that is if you're not watching the much-anticipated return of The Late Late Show, or checking out Netflix's latest addition, a brilliant but little seen heist movie!
Blithe Spirit - Sky Showcase - 8pm
Judi Dench, Dan Stevens, Leslie Mann and Isla Fisher star in this period rom-com. It isn't very rom and it certainly isn't very com.
Mission Impossible III - E4 - 9pm
Is this maybe the most under-appreciated entry in the MI franchise? It is worth a watch for the incredible bridge attack sequence alone.
Second Act - Virgin Media One - 9pm
Jennifer Lopez stars in this comedy drama about a woman who wants to restart her professional life, but doesn't have the education to back it up, so she decides to fake it til she makes it.
A Fistful of Dynamite - TG4 - 9pm
A much-loved war western directed by Sergio Leone, set against the backdrop of the Mexican Revolutionary War.
The Revenant - FilmFour - 9pm
Our big pick for the night is The Revenant, the only movie that Leonardo DiCaprio has ever won an Oscar for. He plays a hunter left for dead by his crew following a vicious bear attack, but upon recovery, he makes it is his single-minded goal to get revenge on the men who abandoned him. Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson and Will Poulter co-star. The Revenant is also available to watch on Netflix, Prime Video and Disney+ in Ireland and the UK.
Queen & Slim - RTÉ2 - 9.55pm
Daniel Kaluuya and Jodie Turner-Smith star in this modern love story about two people who have their first date take a drastic detour when they are pulled over by a police officer.
The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert - BBC Three - 9.55pm
Two drag queens (Hugo Weaving and Guy Pearce) and a transgender woman (Terrence Stamp) take their cabaret show on the road across the Australian outback.
The Loft - Legend - 10.55pm
Five men (Karl Urban, James Marsden, Wentworth Miller, Eric Stonestreet, Matthias Schoenaerts) share a private penthouse in the city where they all go to for their extramarital affairs. But when the body of a dead woman appears there, they soon realise one of them must be a killer.
Split - MTV - 11pm
James McAvoy is tremendous as the man suffering from multiple personality disorder, who has taken a young woman (Anya Taylor-Joy, also very good) hostage for some truly evil reasons. M. Night Shyamalan's best movie in a long time.
Deuce Bigalo: European Gigolo - Comedy Central Extra - 11pm
Will we even be able to understand the labrynthine plot of this comedy sequel without having recently watched the first Male Gigolo movie? Can we risk it??
Leonado DiCaprio won his one and only Best Actor Oscar for performance in The Revenant
The Big Boss - Sky Max - 11.05pm
Also known as Fists of Fury, this is Bruce Lee's legendary martial arts movie. Not as good as Enter The Dragon but better than Game Of Death.
Greta - RTÉ One - 11.15pm
Neil Jordan (Michael Collins) directs this psychological thriller about an older woman (Isabelle Huppert) who develops a fixation on a young stranger (Chloe Grace Moretz).
A Bigger Splash - BBC One - 11.30pm
Tilda Swinton, Ralph Fiennes, Dakota Johnson and Matthias Schoenaerts star in this very good psychological drama about exes who happen to reunite while on holiday.
Jackass: The Movie - Comedy Central - 12am
Grown men hurt and humiliate themselves for our amusement. We're not complaining.
Amores Perros - FilmFour - 12.05am
The second movie tonight directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu (he is also the director of The Revenant). This is the movie that got Hollywood's attention, telling the story of three strangers who have their lives impossibly linked by a car accident.
X-Men: Apocalypse - Channel 4 - 12.15am
Not the worst of the X-Men movies... but not far from the bottom of the league, either. A complete and total waste of Oscar Isaac as the villain, too.
The Fog - Legend - 12.55am
John Carpenter's classic horror about a small town tormented by vicious ghosts that arrive in... yep, you guessed it, the fog!
