A much-anticipated superhero sequel and 6 more big trailers you might have missed this week

Stephen Porzio

It was a very big week in terms of trailer releases.

Another seven days have gone by, meaning it’s time for JOE’s weekly rundown of trailers released in the world of film and TV.

Before we begin, it should be said that JOE already covered the teasers for the new season of Cobra Kai and that new Netflix comedy-thriller show starring Kristen Bell with the long title in separate articles.

However, there were plenty of other massive trailers this week that we’ve gathered below for your perusal.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One)

2018’s animated superhero flick Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has gone on to be considered one of the best entries in the entire genre, thanks to its eye-popping visuals, inventive premise and the love it clearly had for its iconic characters.

As such, expectations are certainly high for its sequel Across the Spider-Verse, which will be split into two parts – the first of which is set to arrive on 7 October, 2022.

That said, based on the above trailer’s fun interaction between Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) and Gwen Stacy (Hailee Steinfeld) and dazzling animation, we’re confident the sequel will be worthy of the original.

Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre

Filmmaker Guy Ritchie and action star Jason Statham are teaming up once again for this fun-looking spy comedy with a strong supporting cast including Aubrey Plaza, Bugzy Malone, Cary Elwes, Hugh Grant and Josh Hartnett.

It centres on an MI6 agent (Statham) and his team of operatives who recruit one of Hollywood’s biggest movie stars (Hartnett) to help them on an undercover mission.

It will be released in Ireland on 21 January, just a couple of weeks after Ritchie and Statham’s last collaboration Wrath of Man landed on Prime video.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2

In this sequel to the hit 2020 video game adaptation, Sonic (Ben Schwartz) and Tails (Colleen O’Shaughnessey) must try to prevent Doctor Eggman (Jim Carrey) and Knuckles the Echidna (new cast addition Idris Elba) from finding the Master Emerald.

The movie will speed into Irish cinemas on 8 April.

Texas Chainsaw Massacre

Tobe Hooper’s 1974 horror masterpiece is getting another sequel, this time courtesy of Netflix.

It follows mass murderer Leatherface after 50 years of hiding as he returns to terrorise a group of idealistic young friends who accidentally disrupt his carefully shielded world in a remote Texas town.

Featuring amongst its cast Ireland’s own Moe Dunford and Olwen Fouéré, the movie lands on the streamer on 18 February.

MacGruber

Now onto TV, this series functions as a sequel to 2010 cult action-comedy MacGruber and will see Will Forte return to play the title character, a parody of MacGyver.

Also featuring in its cast Billy Zane, Kristen Wiig, Laurence Fishburne, Ryan Phillippe and Sam Elliott, it arrives in the US on 16 December so you can expect it in Ireland sometime after that.

Halo

Aliens threaten human existence in the 26th century in this TV adaptation of legendary video game series Halo.

Featuring amongst its cast Bokeem Woodbine (Fargo) and Pablo Schreiber (Orange is the New Black), the show is set for a early 2022 release.

One for sports fans, this show – co-created by Adam McKay (Don’t Look Up, The Big Short) – will tell the story of how the Los Angeles Lakers became the most successful professional basketball team in the 1980s.

Starring John C. Reilly as former Los Angeles Lakers owner Jerry Buss, it will be released in the US in March so you can expect it in Ireland some time after.
