A new Batman movie is reportedly set to start filming in 2019

This is despite the fact that their is still no confirmed actor in the lead role.

DC is rebounding.

Everyone seemed to be certain that the DCEU was headed for a DOA situation, but with Aquaman heading for $1 billion at the worldwide box office, this could be the first step towards a major course correction.

2019 will see DC bringing us a new movie about The Joker, as well as Shazam!, while pre-production work continues on Suicide Squad 2, and the all female spin-off Birds Of Prey.

At the end of 2018, it was more-or-less confirmed that Ben Affleck won’t be back as Bruce Wayne (and, apparently, ditto for Henry Cavill for Superman), but director Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, War For The Planet Of The Apes) had already given details on what to expect from the new take on the hero:

“I’ve talked about making it a very point of view noir-driven definitive Batman story in which he is investigating a particular case and that takes us out into the world of Gotham. I went on a deep dive again revisiting all my favourite comics.

“Those all inform by osmosis. There’s no continuation of the Nolan films. It’s very much trying to find a way to do this as something that for me is going to be definitively Batman and new and cool.”

Well, over the weekend, The Hollywood Reporter announced that Matt Reeves is essentially done with the script, and that Warner Brothers and DC are looking to start shooting the new movie in November this year.

With no Bruce Wayne/Batman confirmed in the lead role, nor any other actor or character or any real direction as to what the plot might be, THR discussed that since the movie is set to start film in about 11 months time, they speculated on when we will hear who will be wearing the cowl: “So let’s say between now and then?”

Helpful.

This is just the latest entry in the very entertaining year that Batman has had, including the first ever full-frontal look at his Bat-Wang, while we ourselves have put forward a pitch for who we think the big villain should be for the next movie.

Meanwhile, for the folks that not only went to see Justice League, but also sat all the way through it, then you’ll remember that movie had already set up a big bad guy for the next Batman movie.

Whether or not they’ll do it is another question…
