Powerful Sinead O’Connor documentary now available to watch at home

Rory Cashin

Nothing Compares

The documentary has a score of 99% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Released in cinemas in Ireland and the UK in October 2022, Nothing Compares was an immediate must-watch for fans of Sinead O’Connor, but will prove to be an even more powerful reminder of the artist in the days following her passing.

Focusing on her life from 1987 to 1993, reflecting on her words and deeds that placed her as a fearless trailblazer in the music scene, but which also ultimately resulted in her becoming an outsider in the pop mainstream.

Featuring interviews and archive footage with everyone from Gay Byrne to Billie Eilish, the documentary went on to win top prizes at the IFTAs, the British Independent Film Awards, the Galway Film Fleadh, and was nominated for Best World Cinema Documentary Feature at the Sundance Film Festival.

Upon cinematic releases, Nothing Compares scored a huge 99% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with some of those reviews right here:

Chicago Sun-Times – “It’s an invaluable look at a complicated and often misunderstood artist who is more than the usual talking points of ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ and ‘ripped up a picture of the pope on Saturday Night Live’.”

The Guardian – “This is a bracing guide to a brilliant individual who declined to conform.”

Entertainment Weekly – “It’s hard to argue with the raw power of the story on screen – and the timeliness of it too, no matter how long overdue.”

But perhaps the most poignant review comes from The Telegraph, with their heartbreaking-in-hindsight final line:

“Some might criticise its narrow focus, but on its own terms Nothing Compares is the most potent and hard-hitting film about the travails of a woman in the pop industry since Asif Kapadia’s 2016 Oscar-winning Amy. And what makes it ultimately more heartening than that anguished documentary about Amy Winehouse, is that O’Connor offers a story of survival.”

Nothing Compares is available to watch on Sky Documentaries or with a NOW Entertainment Membership, and will air on Sky Showcase and Sky Arts in the coming days.
