Currently streaming through the service NOW, the movie is inspired by the true story of the eponymous trials held by the Allies against the defeated Nazi regime in the 1940s.
The film follows American psychiatrist Douglas Kelley (Malek), who is tasked with evalutating the mental fitness of Nazi war criminals, as he becomes embroiled in a "psychological chess match" with the Nazi leader Hermann Göring (Crowe).
Nuremberg is written and directed by James Vanderbilt (who penned the screenplay for the Zodiac) and is based on Jack El-Hai’s acclaimed non-fiction book The Nazi and the Psychiatrist.
Praised by critics upon release for its performances (particularly Crowe's), for its pacing and for shining a light on important history, Nuremberg seems to have struck a chord with audiences.
Not only does it hold a near-perfect 95% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, it also grossed $37 million on a reported $7-10 million budget.
You can check out some of the glowing reviews for Nuremberg below:
Boston Globe: "Rami Malek and Russell Crowe lead a cast of actors doing excellent work in this large scale, old school ensemble piece."
Empire: "Well-paced, expertly performed, and an urgent call to stand up to fascism, Nuremberg is a powerful, sweeping story of the attempt to bring an unthinkable evil to justice."
Independent (UK): "Crowe and Malek are well cast for this kind of dance. The former is a battering ram of an onscreen presence, mixed here with an unnerving sense of comfort in his surroundings."
Movie Mom: "Nuremberg is well paced, as a thriller, a courtroom drama, and an exploration of history and the human capacity for evil and for good. It is never didactic or heavy-handed."
USA Today: "An all-star period effort that leans entertaining, though gets deadly serious exactly when it needs to, the film hinges on the matching of wits between Rami Malek as an Army psychiatrist and Russell Crowe as one of the most evil men in the world."
Nuremberg is currently streaming in Ireland and UK through the service NOW.
