One of the best action films of the last five years is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

Tom Cruise

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to watch this movie.

Stuck for something to watch this Thursday evening? Not to worry as JOE has compiled a list of the best movies airing on TV tonight.

Below are our picks for this evening.

Mission: Impossible – Fallout – Film Four – 9pm

In the sixth installment of the long-running Mission: Impossible series, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team, along with some familiar allies, race against time after a mission gone wrong.

Thanks to Tom Cruise’s increasingly death-defying stunts, as well as series addition Henry Cavill famously reloading his fists as if they were guns, Fallout is our recommendation for this evening.

It is the most thrilling entry in the Mission: Impossible franchise to date and remains a high point for Hollywood action cinema in general.

The Mask of Zorro – Comedy Central – 9pm

A young thief seeking revenge for his brother’s death (Antonio Banderas) is trained by the once-great, aging Zorro (Anthony Hopkins), who is pursuing his own vengeance.

Paying tribute to classic Hollywood swashbuckler films, The Mask of Zorro was a hit with audiences and critics upon its release in 1998.

A Good Day to Die Hard – ITV 4 – 10pm

John McClane (Bruce Willis) travels to Russia to help out his seemingly wayward son, Jack (Jai Courtney). Upon arrival, he discovers that Jack is a CIA operative working undercover, causing the father and son to team up against underworld forces.

Unquestionably the least of the Die Hard films due to its implausible action set-pieces and lack of focus on McClane as a character, fans of Willis and the franchise may still get some pleasure out of it.

Get Carter – Turner Classic Movies – 10.50pm

When his brother dies under mysterious circumstances in a car accident, London gangster Jack Carter (Michael Caine) travels to Newcastle to investigate.

This 70’s British gangster flick has garnered a cult following since its release and is one of Caine’s most iconic movies.

Wilde – BBC Four – 10.55pm

This British biographical drama sees Stephen Fry take on the role of legendary Irish poet and playwright Oscar Wilde.

Prospect – Film Four – 11.55pm

Prospect centres on a teenage girl and her father (The Mandalorian’s Pedro Pascal) traveling to an alien moon with a contract to mine gems in its poisonous forest. There, the father is driven by greed, and the two encounter dangerous strangers in the forest.

This 2018 low-budget sci-fi earned raves from critics, thanks to its emphasis on atmosphere, character development and story.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
