Fargo – RTÉ One – 11.35pm

In our pick for tonight, a pregnant Minnesota police chief (Frances McDormand) investigates a number of roadside homicides.

The deaths are connected to a desperate car salesman (William H. Macy) and his scheme to have his wife kidnapped by two criminals (Peter Stormare and Steve Buscemi) in order to extort a hefty ransom from her wealthy father (Harve Presnell).

Written and directed by the Coen Brothers, Fargo earned two Oscars with McDormand winning in the Best Actress category and the Coens winning for Best Original Screenplay.

The awards were deserved as the movie boasts pitch-perfect performances across the board and a screenplay that somehow successfully blends wickedly funny comedy and incredibly shocking violence in a way that no film has achieved quite as well since.

It also went on to inspire a terrific series of the same name, which has run for four seasons.

Ghost in the Shell – Film4 – 11.40pm

Scarlett Johansson stars in this live-action remake of the classic Japanese anime.
