Paul Mescal of Normal People was the most searched person on the internet last week

He’s come a long way since the Leinster minor football final of 2014.

In recent times, it’s hard to remember a slice of Irish pop culture that has had such an impact at home and abroad as Normal People, the TV adaptation of the novel of the same name by Irish author Sally Rooney.

The Kardashians are watching it, it nearly caused Liveline to self-destruct, it has people all over the world wondering what the hell is this Gaelic Football sport Conall is playing and it’s racked up over one million views on the RTÉ  Player after just six episodes.

Obviously, circumstances dictating that most people around the world are watching a lot more TV than usual has helped, but even still, it’s making a phenomenal impact.

The scale of that impact was illustrated by the appearance of Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar-Jones on the Late Late Show with James Corden on TV stateside and Corden himself addressed it early on in a virtual chat with the main stars on Wednesday night.

The host informed Mescal that he was the most searched person on the Internet last week, which prompted surprise from the former Kildare minor star and also a charming story about how his father is dealing with the media attention for his in-demand son.

Inevitably, the show’s much-scrutinised sex scenes came up for discussion, while the two co-stars also performed a live chemistry test, where they sought to recreate their connection on Normal People in moments from other TV shows.

You can watch their appearance on the show in full in the videos below.
