Filming on the project is already underway.
Casting has been announced for SAS: Rogue Heroes, a new BBC One drama series from Peaky Blinders and Taboo creator Steven Knight.
Based on a best-selling book of the same name, the series is a dramatised account of how the SAS was formed under extraordinary circumstances in the darkest days of World War II.
Connor Swindells (Sex Education) will play the lead character, with the supporting cast around him including Jack O’Connell (Skins, Starred Up), Alfie Allen (Jojo Rabbit, Game Of Thrones), Sofia Boutella (Climax, Kingsman: The Secret Service) and Dominic West (The Wire, The Affair).
Though no release date has been set for the show, filming is underway now.
The series will be written by Knight and directed by Tom Shankland, who worked on The Missing and The Serpent recently.
In a statement about the show, Knight said: “I’m really excited to be gathering together the very best of a new generation of British and International talent to tell this remarkable story.
“The people who are depicted and who did such extraordinary things were young, in their 20s, and we have made a conscious decision to cast people of the same age.
“We enter this project with a spirit of adventure and believe our young and talented actors will do justice to this period of history.”
Last month, it was confirmed that Peaky Blinders’ upcoming sixth season will be its last, though Knight has said the story “will continue in another form”.
