Peep Show to get American, gender-swapped remake

Rory Cashin

There is one very specific reason why we’re optimistic about this.

Sometimes, when shows cross the Atlantic from the UK to the US, they get better.

Not always, obviously. Skins, anyone? Anyone?? Or did you know there was an American version of The Inbetweeners? Because there was. And it was terrible.

But let us be honest here, when it comes to TV, the US know what they’re doing, so sometimes they can improve upon the original, and you get something like House Of Cards, or The Office (the US version is better, deal with it, don’t @ me), or Shameless.

So the news that Peep Show, which ran for 54 episodes across 9 seasons from 2003 to 2015, is being lined up for the remake treatment isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Sure, there has already been attempts at an American remake, one of which was set to star Johnny Galecki before he struck contract gold with The Big Bang Theory, but the signs are good for this new attempt.

First of all, Deadline are reporting that it looks set to be written by Karey Dornetto, and she has previously written for South Park, Arrested Development, Community, and Portlandia, so we know she has the comedy skills to spare.

Additionally, original Peep Show co-creator Sam Bain told The Guardian that he is looking for more diversity in comedy, and “the best way of building gender inclusivity into scripts is to get women to write them. I can’t wait to find out what sick and twisted bullshit goes on inside the minds of a pair of female losers.”

We 100% agree.
