People are absolutely loving the gripping IRA prison-set drama that’s on Netflix

Paul Moore

IRA Netflix

Based on a true story and highly recommended.

As seen by the critical success of films like In the Name of the Father, ’71, Hunger, The General, The Wind that Shakes the Barley and Fifty Dead Men Walking, there’s no denying the draw that history continues to have on Irish film fans.

On top of this, the wave of praise that the recent Bobby Sands documentary, 66 Days, and Patrick Kielty’s personal account of The Good Friday Agreement have received are further proof of this.

On that note, Tom Vaughan-Lawlor has been earning very impressive reviews for his performance as Larry Marley, the main architect behind the famous prison break in the prison-set IRA drama, Maze.

In case you haven’t seen this film yet, the Love/Hate star is a tour de force in the film that’s based on the true story of the 1983 breakout of 38 IRA prisoners from HMP Maze in Northern Ireland.

Ok, what’s it about?

As Larry Marley (Vaughan-Lawlor), the chief architect of the escape, schemes his way towards pulling off this feat, he comes into contact with prison warden, Gordon Close (Barry Ward).

Initially, Larry and Gordon are confirmed enemies, born on opposite sides of Northern Ireland’s political divide, but when Larry realises that Gordon may be unwittingly useful for his escape plan, a slow ‘friendship’ begins.

Larry intends to use and manipulate Gordon in order to get closer to his goal but what follows is a tense, and intriguing drama in which an unlikely relationship is forged between two enemies that will have far reaching consequences for the both of them.

Since being added to Netflix, Stephen Burke’s film has impressed plenty of people that have seen it.

If you’re looking for something to get stuck into, Maze might be just the thing for you.

These film fans agree.
