Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman will return to our screens as Sherlock & Watson early next year and to make the announcement the BBC rented a hearse.

Fans of Sherlock will know exactly why the BBC went in a fairly morbid direction for the announcement of Sherlock season three on BBC One, but just in case you don’t we’ll fill you in.

Warning: Spoilers ahead…

At the end of season two Sherlock throws himself off a building and lands in front of his faithful sidekick Watson. Watson saw the whole thing and he witnessed Sherlock’s body being lowered into a grave, so as far as Watson knows, Sherlock is 6ft under (hence the hearse).

However, as you’ll see on the side of the hearse, Sherlock lives! And he’ll be back on our screens on New Year’s Day. The episodes run for an hour and a half each, which means there are only three episodes in each series. The second episode will air on January 5, with the third and final episode being broadcast a week later on January 12.

It’s going to be a good New Year for Sherlock fans.
