The movie scored a whopping 94% on Rotten Tomatoes.
When it comes to hidden gems, You Hurt My Feelings might be as close as we’re gonna get in terms of a perfect dictionary definition. Released in cinemas in the States in May of this year, it was unfortunately not picked up for a cinematic release on this side of the Atlantic.
Making less than $6 million at the worldwide box office, it is exactly the kind of movie that doesn’t get the audience it deserved, but hopefully will get a new lease of life now that it is available on streaming.
You Hurt My Feelings is the re-teaming of star Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Veep, Seinfeld) and writer/director Nicole Holofcener after their brilliantly low-key comedy Enough Said, which actually turns 10 years old next month and is 100% worth seeking out.
As for their new movie, it tells the story of a novelist (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) whose longstanding marriage is suddenly upended when she overhears her husband (Tobias Menzies – The Crown, Black Mirror) giving his honest reaction to her latest book.
Racking up 94% on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie scored a number of perfect scores from critics upon its initial release:
The Boston Globe – “The summer season rarely has room for a nice, adult comedy like You Hurt My Feelings. It is counter-programming of the finest order and one of the year’s best films. 5 stars”
The New York Times – “This is a work of discipline and structure. It’s a situation comedy in the best, classical sense: These people’s ethical problems are sometimes ours. I’ve been Beth. I’ve been Don. And I had to watch half of what they’re dealing with through my fingers. 5 stars”
The Washington Post – “As a slice of life spiked with mordant, uncynical humour, it’s deliciously entertaining. In other words, it’s another Holofcener movie, which means it’s perilously close to perfect. 5 stars”
You Hurt My Feelings is available to watch on Prime Video right now.
