One of 2026’s biggest sci-fi movies drops incredible first trailer

People who've seen the movie early describe it as 'all gas, no brakes', with some even comparing it to Mad Max: Fury Road.

So, the honour of being the first undeniably great classic video game movie adaptation is still up for grabs.

What could secure this title is the upcoming Resident Evil reboot from Zach Cregger, director of the brilliant horror thrillers Barbarian and Weapons, the latter of which won an Oscar earlier this year.

His take on the horror sci-fi property will follow Bryan (played by Weapons standout Austin Abrams), a young medical courier who is asked to make a late-night, last-minute delivery to Raccoon City General.

Tempted by the promise of double pay, he ventures out into the night, quickly finding himself in "an action-packed, non-stop race for survival".

Alongside Abrams, the cast of Resident Evil 2026 includes Kali Reis (True Detective), Paul Walter Hauser (The Naked Gun), and Zach Cherry (Severance).

Speaking to IGN earlier this year, Cregger said of his video game adaptation: "My rule for this movie was to try and make a movie that felt like my experience of playing the games, that could live in the world of Resident Evil."

Early reactions to the film seem to suggest he accomplished this goal.

As per the website World of Reel, the buzz for the upcoming Resident Evil movie from test screenings is very strong.

Viewers have described it as "mean and lean" and "all gas, no brakes", with some even drawing comparisons to Oscar-winner Mad Max: Fury Road.

Resident Evil will be out in cinemas on 18 September 2026.
