Rotten Tomatoes reveals the best reviewed movie of 2022

Rory Cashin

Rotten Tomatoes

It is apparently the only movie this year not to receive a single negative review.

Before we get into the Rotten Tomatoes top 10, some qualifiers.

First of all, what qualifies as a “fresh” (i.e. good) review on Rotten Tomatoes is for the reviewer to give the movie an above average score. For example, if a movie gets 3 out of 5 from every single critic in the world, then it would land a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

It isn’t as specific a scoring system as you’d get on Metacritic (which also revealed its best reviewed movies of 2022), but it is a far more popular one.

Another thing is the actual Rotten Tomatoes score itself. The more reviews a movie gets, the more difficult it is for it to maintain a score of 100%. Therefore, you’ll notice in the top ten below, that movies with a higher Rotten Tomatoes score are actually lower in the list. That is because it has received less overall reviews that some other releases, so a balance has been struck between the amount of reviews against the amount of positive reviews.

Still with me? Okay, good. And one more thing: there are still some major players to be released before 2022 is over – Avatar: The Way Of Water, I Wanna Dance With Somebody – but Rotten Tomatoes released their list now, so here we are.

The full top ten are as follows:

  1. An Cailín Ciúin (The Quiet Girl) – 100%
  2. Happening – 99%
  3. Marcell The Shell With Shoes On – 99%
  4. The Banshees of Inisherin – 97%
  5. Till – 98%
  6. Girl Picture – 98%
  7. To Leslie – 98%
  8. EO – 96%
  9. Jujutsu Kaisen 0: The Movie – 98%
  10. Lunana: A Yak in the Classroom – 98%

Yep, that is Irish movie and 2023 Best International Feature hopeful An Cailín Ciúin topping out the charts! The movie is about to debut in New York and Los Angeles so it can officially qualify for the Oscar race in March.

And you’ll notice another Irish feature in that top ten: The Banshees of Inisherin, another major Oscar contender, and if you missed it in the cinema, it is about to land on Disney+ very soon!
