The cameo that has got Ireland talking.

Brad Pitt on Friends. Britney Spears with How I Met Your Mother. Ed Sheeran in Game of Thrones.

They were all cameos that got TV fans talking but none of those people were ever told to ‘fuck off!’ after they tried to order a fish supper.

Oh yes, The Young Offenders are back on 11 November with Season 2 and they’re going to bump into one of Cork’s most famous sons. FYI, you can read our in-depth season preview here.

With regards to Keane’s cameo, it comes in the fourth episode of the season but given the iconic status of the former Manchester United and Celtic midfielder, it’s only natural that people want to know more about this cameo.

Well, the cast of The Young Offenders were guests on the Ray D’Arcy show – Hilary Rose (Mairead), Jennifer Barry (Siobhan), Orla Fitzgerald (Orla Walsh) and Demi Isaac Oviawe (Linda) – and they had a little chat about how Keane ended up in Turners Cross in front of the cameras.

“Yeah, we had Roy Keane on the show! We’re finally allowed to say it because it has been a big secret that we’ve tried to keep. Obviously, it went online and everybody knows about it now, so yeah, Roy Keane is a special guest on the show. He was phenomenal, he was amazing. I mean, I’m such a Roy Keane fan – I think you can tell! I really am. Obviously, being from Cork, you know, but he’s just amazing. He’s fantastic,” said Hilary Rose.

Ok, so how did it happen?

Rose explains, “he kind of got word to us that he was interested and might do a cameo. We were like ‘oh my goodness!’ So, he actually sat down with Peter (Peter Foott -the show’s writer/creator) and they had a coffee and a face-to-face chat. That’s how he does business. And after that chat, he said yes to the cameo.”

Despite the excitement levels reaching fever pitch as the cameras were rolling on Cork City’s pitch, it appears that the draw of meeting the former Ireland captain just wasn’t enough for one cast member.

We’re looking at you Demi Isaac Oviawe!

“Look, I’m really easily impressed, right? We were told ‘Roy Keane is down below in Turners Cross filming. Do you want to come down?’We had an early start that day – we had to be up at something like 05:30 – and people were really enthusiastic about having him on set. They were saying ‘yeah, we’ll drop you down,’ and ‘it’s Roy Keane, like!’ They were all super excited. I was like ‘yeah, I’ll pass on that.’ It’s not that he’s a bad person, it’s just a generational thing. I was tired that day,” explains Oviawe.

Ok, we’ll forgive her. She’s probably a Liverpool fan!

On another note, we’re still wondering if Keane managed to get his fish supper? We’ll have to wait and see.

The first episode in Season 2 of The Young Offenders starts on Monday, 11 November at 21:30 on RTÉ2.
