RTÉ respond to the extreme criticism over Ray D’Arcy’s interview with Dean Strang

Paul Moore

The station paid for the lawyer’s flight and accommodation.

Ray D’Arcy’s recent interview with one-half of Steven Avery’s legal team – the articulate and respected Dean Strang – incited a huge outcry on social media.

Thousands of people felt that the interview was poorly researched, lacking focus and ultimately boring which is a huge pity because the entire world has been transfixed with Steven Avery and Brendan Dassey’s case.

Plenty of people felt that this was a huge missed opportunity.

The Herald has revealed that 412,000 people tuned in to watch the interview and that RTÉ also footed the bill for Strang’s flight and hotel.

Regarding the negative feedback, an RTÉ spokesperson said, “obviously, it is always a challenge to condense a 10-hour documentary series into a much shorter interview and, at all times, Ray was cognisant of the need to help Dean explain the case to those viewers who may not have been aware of the story behind Making a Murder”.

The exact amount that was spent on Strang’s visit wasn’t revealed. It’s also unknown if RTÉ paid the lawyer an appearance fee for starring on the show.
