Ryan Gosling up against Robert Downey Jr. as early Oscar predictions made

Simon Kelly

Best Supporting Actor Barbenheimer

We haven’t seen the last of ‘Barbenheimer’ just yet.

With both Barbie and Oppenheimer enjoying incredible success off the back of their joint release in cinemas last month, the two films continue to smash records left right and centre.

Just today it was announced that Barbie director Greta Gerwig became the first ever female director to land over $1 billion at the box office.

As well as that, Barbie had the biggest opening weekend in history of any movie that isn’t a superhero film, a sequel or a remake.

Oppenheimer enjoyed similar success on a slightly smaller, but no less impressive, level. Upon release, it came in as the 3rd biggest domestic opening ever for a biographical film.

Both movies have also enjoyed major critical praise, with Oppenheimer at 93% and Barbie at 88% on Rotten Tomatoes.

But with that success, comes inherent competition and nothing else will represent that better than next year’s Oscar ceremony.

Already there’s a lot of hype of both films and how they’ll fair come awards season, with two actors front and centre of the battle of Best Supporting Actor.

Predicted Best Supporting Actor nominees see Ryan Gosling facing Robert Downey Jr.

According to Variety’s predicted nominee list for the Best Supporting Actor at the Oscars ceremony next year, both Ryan Gosling (Barbie) and Robert Downey Jr. (Oppenheimer) will be in the running for the award.

Downey has already been nominated twice – for Chaplin in 1992 and his controversial role in Tropic Thunder in 2008. In Oppenheimer he portrays the villain of the film, Lewis Strauss, the head of the Atomic Energy Commission who has a personal vendetta against Oppenheimer.

While Gosling hasn’t been nominated in the category before, he has been nominated for two Best Actor awards – for Half Nelson in 2007 and again for La La Land in 2017. In Barbie, he plays Ken, whose job is beach.

While both are strong contenders for the award, if they are indeed nominated, they’re potentially up against some very stiff competition. Most notably, Robert DeNiro for his role in the upcoming Martin Scorsese epic Killers of the Flower Moon.

Downey’s co-star Matt Damon is also an outside runner for Best Supporting Actor.

Check out the full list below and remember, these are just Variety’s predictions, and may well change come the announcement.
