Saoirse Ronan teaches America how to pronounce her name in Saturday Night Live monologue

They might never get it right.

Saoirse Ronan has established herself as one of the finest actresses around in recent years, but despite her ever-increasing profile, her peers and audiences Stateside still can’t grasp how to pronounce her first name.

It’s been something of an ongoing theme in the last few years, with Ryan Gosling once providing a lesson in how to pronounce Saoirse at an awards ceremony after a number of failed high-profile attempts, most notably by Dennis Quaid with this particularly pitiful attempt.

Saoirse’s not the only well-known Irish person to have suffered in this way; it’s happened to Domhnall Gleeson too.

With Saoirse hosting a very Irish edition of Saturday Night Live this weekend, teaching the audience how to pronounce her first name was as good a place to start as any in her opening monologue, which she did through song and with the help of some SNL regulars.

This should really go a long way to prevent her name being butchered in the US in the future, but we have a feeling it’s going to be something she has to put up with for another while yet.
