Derry Girls Season 2

Derry Girls is back!

There was no need for Channel 4 to wise up our catch themselves on because as soon as the first episode of Derry Girls aired, the station knew that they had a massive hit on their hands.

This being said, as various members of the cast and crew have stated, nobody involved with Lisa McGee’s show knew just how big a hit the comedy was going to be.

Funny, original and most importantly, honest, Season One of Derry Girls managed to capture the impossible – create a show that was true to its local roots and yet, universal in its appeal.

With each passing week, much like Michelle at her very loudest, the word of mouth spread and this all culminated with the show being voted as the greatest comedy of the modern era by the Radio Times.

Derry Girls also holds the record for the highest amount of consolidated viewers in Northern Ireland  – basically, it’s the biggest ever series since modern viewership records began in 2002.

That’s not all though because there’s some icing on the cream horn.

Across the UK, consolidated viewing figures reveal that the first series of Derry Girls was watched by an average of 2.5 million viewers, making it Channel 4’s biggest comedy launch since 2004.

In an interview with JOE, Ian McElhinney revealed that the cast would be reuniting for a week of read throughs and rehearsals before the cameras start to roll and true to his word, our favourite Derry girls – and the wee English fella – are back together as the ball starts to roll on Season 2 of the award-winning show.

In terms of what we can expect, Lisa McGee has been tight-lipped about the plotlines for the new episodes but there have been a variety of rumours including; Nadine Coyle making a cameo, Bill Clinton’s visit to Derry being covered, and the ceasefire being mentioned, it’s clear that the show can go in any direction.

Hell, Jamie-Lee O’Donnell (Michelle) even fancies the idea of a crossover with The Young Offenders.

With news that the show looks set to continue on beyond the next season, we’re delighted to see that the cast are back together and this news was shared by Nicola Coughlan (Clare) and Dylan Llewellyn (James).

Now, any chance of a cameo from Kamal ‘the wee Ethiopian fella’ from Ballybofey?
