The Shelbys are coming back!
Much like tommy Shelby after a hard day at the races/bookies/factory/distillery/Charlie’s Yard/the countless other places where he’s working, the cast and crew of Peaky Blinders fully deserve to put their feet up and celebrate with a glass of whiskey.
As you can see below, Season 5 of Steven Knight’s wonderful series has finished filming and the whole gang celebrated with a group photo that’s bound to get fans excited.
Now that the show has switched to BBC1, the stakes are even higher as Tommy moves into the world of politics but things aren’t going to be easy. Hell, they never are for the leader of the Peaky Blinders!
Steven Knight has said that the rise of fascism and the Wall Street Crash will be factors in the new episodes but as always with Tommy, we suspect that he’s got a plan.
Aside from the likes of Cillian Murphy, Packy Lee, Charlie Murphy, and a host of new Irish arrivals – Brian Gleeson, Emmett Scanlan, Charlene McKenna, and Daryl McCormack are new faces that will feature in the new episodes – Season 5 is also being directed by an Irishman, Anthony Byrne.
In terms of the plot, Knight has said: “We are going into the 30s now. There is so much stuff happening, so why not finish the job? The depression and the rise of fascism form part of the storyline. It is setting those things up. In the 30s across Europe and Britain there was the rise of fascism.”
The official synopsis from the new season reads: “Series five of Steven Knight’s crime family saga finds the world thrown into turmoil by the financial crash of 1929. Opportunity and misfortune are everywhere. When Tommy Shelby MP (Cillian Murphy) is approached by a charismatic politician with a bold vision for Britain, he realises that his response will affect not just his family’s future but that of the entire nation.”
Whatever direction the new season goes, three things are guaranteed.
1) It’s going to be fantastic, 2) there’s going to be whiskey, 3) Tommy will have a plan.
At present, no premiere date has been announced but the excitement levels are rising.
Paul Anderson and Emmett Scanlan also shared very heartfelt messages to their Instagram accounts.
That’s a wrap! By order of the #PeakyBlinders cast and crew.
