He doesn’t exactly see the funny side…
A couple of days ago, all the way back in 2018, an audio illusion gripped the internet.
Grover from Sesame Street has been accused of swearing in an episode of the legendary kids TV series.
The clip below shows Grover saying one of two things: “Oh the camera, yes, that sounds like an excellent idea” or “Oh the camera, yes, that’s a fuckin’ excellent idea.”

What do you hear?
Frank Oz, a well-known puppeteer, (and also the voice and performer of Yoda in Star Wars), has weighed in on the subject, and he really doesn’t seem to see the funny side of it.
When he was asked on Twitter about the clip, he responded by saying “people will hear what they want to hear.”
Really? I didn’t perform Grover there but I assure you, we take the purity of the characters very seriously. But people will hear what they want to hear.

In a second tweet, Oz, who has worked with The Muppets and Sesame Street for 35 years, said: “I’ve never understood why some people love imagining that, between takes, we screw around with the characters by having them swear or having them use sexual innuendos or putting cigarettes in their mouths and laughing. We don’t. It would be a betrayal of the character’s purity.”
Well that’s us told.
Considering how unfunny The Happytime Murders was – a movie about foul-mouthed, sexualised puppets – he might actually have a point.
