Our TV movie pick for tonight (Tuesday, 4 August) is Seven Psychopaths, the cult classic 2012 crime comedy thriller from Irish writer-director Martin McDonagh (The Banshees of Inisherin, In Bruges).
The film stars Colin Farrell (The Penguin, Thirteen Lives) as Martin, an Irish writer living in Los Angeles struggling with writer's block. While he has come up with a striking title for his new screenplay, Seven Psychopaths, that's all he has.
He may find inspiration, however, from the killer gangster, Charlie (Woody Harrelson, Triple 9), soon to be on his tail.
This is after Martin's struggling actor pal, Billy (Sam Rockwell, Moon), and his partner, Hans (Christopher Walken, The Deer Hunter), kidnap Charlie's beloved Shih Tzu dog and hold him to ransom.
Also co-starring Abbie Cornish (Somersault), Harry Dean Stanton (Escape from New York), Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace), Tom Waits (Dracula), and Željko Ivanek (The Manchurian Candidate), Seven Psychopaths was McDonagh's immediate follow-up to the Oscar-nominated In Bruges.
Perhaps the writer-director's most overtly comic movie to date, the 2012 film should appeal to fans of Guy Ritchie and Quentin Tarantino, thanks to its larger-than-life characters and its darkly funny, scabrous dialogue.
That said, we'd argue that Seven Psychopaths feels deeper than many similar-in-tone capers. While its characters are chaotic and flawed, they have genuine pathos.
Plus, as the movie is about an Irish writer named Martin living in LA, there is a personal element to the story.
Given how the plot plays out, Seven Psychopaths feels like McDonagh dramatising how his mind comes up with ideas for stories, and maybe even exploring how it feels to spend time in America as a newcomer.
And with McDonagh and Rockwell collaborating again on comedy-thriller Wild Horse Nine, due for release on November 6.
Seven Psychopaths is airing on TV tonight/tomorrow morning on Sky Comedy at 9pm.
