Irish legend Shay Given spoke about the impact of his mam’s death on The Ray D’Arcy Show on RTÉ.
Shay Given is, without question, the greatest goalkeeper in the history of Irish soccer (sorry Packie), his career with the Boys in Green having spanned 20 years, an incredible 134 caps and a series of brilliant saves.
What many would not have known about the 41-year-old, however, is that he lost his mam at the age of just 4 and was brought up – along with his five siblings – by his dad in Donegal.
Speaking to Ray D’Arcy on Saturday night, Shay recalled his last memory of his mother on the Christmas before she died and how his father fulfilled her dying wish not to see the family broken up.
Given became visibly emotional as he paid tribute to his dad and the role he played his life and career.
