Shazam director didn’t think that HUGE cameo in the sequel would actually happen

Stephen Porzio

“It was always intended. I didn’t really believe it was going to happen.”

Superhero sequel Shazam! Fury of the Gods landed in cinemas on Friday.

And with people now having had the chance to check out the movie in theatres, this article does get into spoilers regarding the blockbuster. So, if you have not watched the film yet, stop reading here (you can also take our quiz based on the first movie).

You still with us? Okay, let’s get into that huge cameo.

So, Fury of the Gods centres around young hero Billy Batson aka Shazam (played by both Zachary Levi and Asher Angel) and his foster siblings as they try and protect the world from the vengeful daughters of Atlas (played by Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu and Rachel Zegler).

In the climax of the movie, Billy winds up saving the day but sacrificing himself in the process. Seemingly dead, his crush throughout the movie Diana Prince aka Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) then appears. With her goddess powers, she fixes a broken magical staff, which she then uses to revive Billy.

JOE had the opportunity to interview Shazam’s returning director David F. Sandberg for the sequel, during which we asked him about that major cameo.

In response, he said that while the plan was always for Wonder Woman to make an appearance in the blockbuster, he had doubts it would actually happen.

He explained:

“It was always intended. I didn’t really believe it was going to happen because of experiences in the past where things like that haven’t worked out. But I was very glad that we could make that happen.

“Because of certain circumstances, we had to shoot that [scene] separately. So, there are characters who meet onscreen who never met in real life. But it turned out quite convincing I thought. I turned out really well.”

Shazam! Fury Of The Gods is in Irish cinemas now, and you can check out our full interview with Sandberg below. Meanwhile, you can find our chats with Shazam himself Zachary Levi here, Asher Angel and Jack Dylan Grazer here, as well Lucy Liu and Rachel Zegler here.
