Susan Cox Powell disappeared in 2009. Her husband Josh was almost immediately named as a suspect and the police also surveilled Josh’s brother, Michael.
Susan was just 28 years old when she disappeared from her home in Utah.
Sadly, this story would get far more sinister.
While suspicion fell on to her husband, Josh Powell, he was never charged in connection with Susan’s disappearance, but in 2012, after losing custody of the children to Susan’s parents, he killed himself and their two children in a fiery explosion at his home in Graham, Washington.
It was also discovered that Josh’s father, Steve Powell, was sexually infatuated with his daughter-in-law.
Michael Powell died by suicide while his father was later sent to prison for voyeurism and possession of child pornography. Steve Powell died in prison in 2018.
West Valley City police said they believe Josh Powell killed Susan and that his brother Michael helped him dispose of the body. After Michael’s death, police closed the case in 2013 because they did not have any leads.
To this day, no one knows what truly happened to Susan Cox Powell.
While investigating her disappearance, police found a safety deposit box which contained a letter from Susan that was addressed to her friends and family. The letter was titled ‘Last will and testament of Susan Powell’.
Susan wrote in her will that if she died, “it may not be an accident, even if it looks like one.”
According to a search warrant affidavit cited by The Seattle Times, Susan stated that she “does not trust her husband and that he has threatened to destroy her if they get divorced and her children will not have a mother and father.” Local station KIMA TV also reported that Susan wrote: “I want it documented somewhere that there is extreme turmoil in our marriage.”
In the new documentary The Disappearance of Susan Cox Powell, the filmmakers uncover new details of the final years of Susan’s life and examine other potential suspects, including her father-in-law Steven Powell.
The two-part documentary, led by investigative journalist Stephanie Bauer, documents new developments and scandalous never-before-seen videos, plus rare interviews with family members.
Sky Crime and NOW TV have confirmed that The Disappearance of Susan Cox Powell will be available to watch in October.
