The Sopranos prequel and 5 more movies and shows to watch this week

Rory Cashin

We’re not kidding when we say this is one of the best weeks for new movies and shows we’ve seen in a LONG time…

We’re absolutely SPOILED for great choices this week, but the hard part is deciding which of the new arrivals will be the best for YOU to spend your hours enjoying…

The latest episode of The Big Reviewski can be watched in full below or you can skip to the cinema reviews (7:01), home entertainment recommendations (16:25), and classic re-watches (23:40).

Here are the new cinema releases (or should we say release, as there is just the one this week), which will all be available on the big screens around Ireland from Friday, 24 September.

THE MANY SAINTS OF NEWARK

The Sopranos prequel movie is finally out this week!

In the run-up to the movie’s release, JOE was lucky enough to chat to some of the cast and creators, including stars Ray Liotta (interview below), Michael Gandolfini, Alessandro NivolaLeslie Odom Jr. and Michela De Rossi, as well as director Alan Taylor, and David Chase, the creator of The Sopranos.

THE GREEN KNIGHT

As we mentioned elsewhere on site, this is one of the most-anticipated movies of the last few years within certain film-loving circles. The Arthurian legend stars Dev Patel, Barry Keoghan, Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton and Sean Harris.

The movie arrives in cinemas and on Prime Video on Friday, 24 September.

And now on to the stuff you can watch at home this week, starting with…

Y: THE LAST MAN

As we said in our review, this is a slick, smart, end-of-the-world thriller series, about a young man (played by Ben Schnetzer, who we interviewed below) who discovers he is the last human male left alive on the planet.

The first three episodes of Y: The Last Man are available to watch on Disney+ right now.

MIDNIGHT MASS

Netflix’s new series from the creator of The Haunting Of Hill House is a slow-burn drama ending in all-out horror. Check out our review right here.

All seven episodes of Midnight Mass arrive on Netflix on Friday, 24 September.

FOUNDATION

The biggest show ever filmed in Ireland (take that, Game of Thrones!), this sprawling sci-fi epic sees a race of futuristic aliens discovering that they may be on the brink of extinction.

The first two episodes of Foundation arrive on Friday, 24 September, with the rest of the season arriving weekly after that.

And finally, the amazingly exciting Pizza And A Movie section…

Here are this week’s picks, with the vote once again going up on JOE’s Instagram channel, so keep an eye out on that to have your say!

Rory’s Pick – MAN ON FIRE

Denzel Washington’s revenge rampage action movie didn’t make a lot at the box office and didn’t get great reviews when it was released way back in 2004, but it has developed a total cult following in the almost-two-decades since then.

Man On Fire has been added to Netflix this week.

Eoghan’s Pick – THE LIFE AQUATIC WITH STEVE ZISSOU

Bill Murray, Owen Wilson, Cate Blanchett, Willem Dafoe, Michael Gambon, Jeff Goldblum and Anjelica Huston star in Wes Anderson’s quirk-fest about a deep-sea explorer hunting a mythical creature.

The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou is available to watch on Disney+ right now.
