One of the most expensive Xmas films of all time drops in a couple of weeks

Charlie Herbert

This already sounds like a surefire hit

One of the most expensive Christmas films ever made, Spirited, is being released later this month, and it sounds brilliant.

Spirited is set to drop on Apple TV in less than two weeks, and stars Hollywood megastars Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds in a retelling of arguably the most famous festive tale of them all – Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.

Following in the footsteps on the Muppets, Jim Carrey and many others, two of the funniest men in cinema will now be part of their own telling of the story.

Reynolds will play the role of Clint Briggs, a modern Ebenezer Scrooge, whilst Ferrell will be the Ghost of Christmas Present.

This can’t fail to be good, surely?

‘Hilarious musical twist on the classic Dickens tale’

Spirited‘s official synopsis reads: “Each Christmas Eve, the Ghost of Christmas Present (Will Ferrell) selects one dark soul to be reformed by a visit from three spirits.

“But this season, he picked the wrong Scrooge. Clint Briggs (Ryan Reynolds) turns the tables on his ghostly host until Present finds himself re-examining his own past, present and future.

“For the first time, A Christmas Carol is told from the perspective of the ghosts in this hilarious musical twist on the classic Dickens tale.”

And, according to Slash Films, the musical numbers have made it one of the most expensive Christmas films ever made, with a huge budget of $75 million.

The film is directed by Sean Anders, who previously worked with Ferrell on Daddy’s Home, and, if you still aren’t convinced, the musical numbers have been written by La La Land‘s Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.

Reynolds told Empire that he doesn’t think he’s a proficient singer or dancer so he found the film “nerve-wracking” to make.

“I don’t, before this, during, or after, profess to be a competent singer or dancer,” he said.

“I’m used to getting on a film set and kind of being able to figure it out in the moment. That’s not the case with a movie like this. You have to live, eat, breathe and sleep this routine. It was exciting, nerve-racking and terrifying. I was actually so scared that I’d go full circle, back to brave. I don’t think I would ever do it again. But I genuinely loved it.”

Spirited will be available to stream on Apple TV from 18 November.
