We don’t know if Darth Vader was paying attention to our recent poll to discover Ireland’s most beloved Star Wars character, but after seeing the magnificent Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, we’re going to say that he did, and he’s pissed off about the result.
The Dark Lord of the Sith came second to the galaxy’s favourite scruffy-looking nerf-herder, thus causing him to unleash all of his anger in the final act of Gareth Edwards’ stellar spin-off.
That’s our theory anyway.

Ever since he was introduced to audiences in 1977, Darth Vader has consistently ranked as one of – if not THE – greatest cinematic villain of all time.
Over the years we’ve seen him Force-choking his own colleagues, mutilating Luke Skywalker’s hand, butchering a village of Tusken Raiders and murdering young Padawans after the Emperor decided to execute Order 66, but in the final act of Rogue One, Star Wars fans finally got a glimpse of Darth Vader at his most terrifying.
Spoiler alert if you haven’t seen it yet. Stop reading then!
Rogue One ends just as Episode IV begins, with Princess Leia in possession of the Death Star plans that were stolen by Jyn Erso and her crew. However, it’s the sequence before this one that caused Star Wars fans to absolutely lose their minds.
As a group of soldiers board a Rebel ship to receive the chip containing the Death Star’s plans, Vader’s iconic breathing is heard in the dark. What follows next is the very definition of the Sith hitting the fan as the famous red lightsaber ignites.
Cue a stream of mutilations, Force choke-holds, ricocheted blaster shots and deaths by lightsaber.
