The two-time Academy Award winner stars in a double role.

The first trailer for the much-anticipated gangster movie The Alto Knights starring Robert De Niro has just been released.

The screenplay was penned by Goodfellas co-writer and The Irishman producer Nicholas Pileggi, with the film directed by Barry Levinson (Bugsy, Rain Man).

Robert De Niro stars in a dual role as mob bosses Vito Genovese and Frank Costello – real-life kingpins of New York’s Genovese crime family.

The film follows the story of the Italian American Mafiosi in the mid-20th century and Genovese’s attempted hit on Costello in 1957.

Also part of the cast with De Niro is Debra Messing as Costello’s wife Bobbie, Kathrine Narducci as Genovese’s wife Anna and Shōgun actor Cosmo Jarvis.

It will be the first time Robert De Niro appears in a gangster movie since 2019’s The Irishman, in which he played Irish American enforcer Frank Sheeran.

Speaking about De Niro in The Alto Knights, Levinson said: “It’s amazing. He’s such an astounding actor. It was literally like two different people, like I was working with two different actors.”

De Niro and Levinson previously worked together on Sleeper, Wag the Dog, What Just Happened and The Wizard of Lies.

The Alto Knights is scheduled to hit Irish cinemas on 21 March 2025.
