“Welcome to the secret world inside your phone…”
Welcome to #TRAILERCHEST, home of the freshest film previews on the web. Today, we’re taking a look at The Emoji Movie
Plot’s it all about?
The completely factual Emoji Movie comes to our screens this August, promising to reveal the hidden world inside our smartphones. In the film, Gene (voiced by T.J. Miller) is a resident of the lively city of Textopolis, where the occupants live in hope of being selected by the smartphone user.
Every emoji in Textopolis is limited to one expression, giving them a role in the smartphone. Gene, however, has multiple expressions, and the film concerns his journey to fit in and become ‘normal’ in a world where he is different.
On his quest, he is accompanied by best mates Jailbreak (Anna Faris) and Hi-5 (played by America’s latest darling, James Corden). Like a trio of conquistadors, they go app-hopping on an adventure to change Gene and save the phone’s future before it is wiped forever.
The film hasn’t received the most smiley faces of receptions by audiences watching the trailers so far; maybe Patrick Stewart playing a talking turd emoji was too far?
This is director Tony Leondis’s biggest project yet, having worked on a range of animated films after starting out as a story artist. As the film is a representation of how much smartphones have influenced culture, we’ll be watching closely when the film is released this summer.
