The show’s creator has revealed he has some big ideas for where he wants to take it next.
True Detective Season One: Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. It ran from January to March in 2014, and it was very, VERY good.
True Detective Season Two: Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch, Rachel McAdams, and Vince Vaughn. It ran from June to August 2015, and while it wasn’t as bad as you might have heard/remembered, it wasn’t particular good, either.
True Detective Season Three: Mahershala Ali, Stephen Dorff, and Carmen Ejogo. After a long break, it ran from January to February 2019, and while it didn’t quite reach the giddy heights of the first season, it was definitely as close to it without actually being as good as it.
So with the love for the show reignited, all eyes are on what creator Nic Pizzolatto is going to do next, and whether he can maintain the new momentum, or if he’ll go the way of Star Trek movies (i.e. only every second one is any good).
Speaking to Indiewire, it sounds like he is fairly confident about the quality of the future of the show. The only problem is he has too many good ideas to choose from:
“I had this idea, and to me, I think it’s a really strong idea, and it would be something I’ve never seen on television before.
“But since then, I’ve had another idea that I’ve talked about with an actor, and that, to me, would be the most exciting thing we could do with True Detective. I think it would be really great for the fans.”
Now… is it just us… or does that seem to vaguely imply that we could be seeing some kind of crossover event? Is it possible that Mahershala Ali will be joining forces with Woody and/or McConaughey for a case? The timing of the narrative doesn’t make a huge amount of sense, but we’ll totally forgive that if it means getting these guys hunting down a killer together.
Outside of that, his mention of “I’ve talked about with an actor” immediately got the cogs working. Which actor would we love to see front a future season of True Detective? Well, Pizzolatto previously wrote the screenplay for the remake of The Magnificent Seven, so… Denzel Washington?
Okay, you’ve heard it here first! Denzel and Mahershala and Woody and Matthew are going killer hunting, confirmed*!
(*absolutely, 100% not confirmed, but we can dream…)
