CULT FICTION: Six reasons why everyone should watch Daredevil

Add it to your list

Add it to your list.

Every week I’m choosing one TV show that deserves your attention because your time is precious and there are some stunning shows available to watch.

This week it’s the wonderful Daredevil.

Daredevil Sequence

1) What’s it about? : If you saw the Ben Affleck film then you might be forgiven for thinking that this show follows the same flashy aesthetic. How wrong you would be.

The Netflix series is a completely different beast because it’s the opposite of Mark Steven Johnson’s ’03 film. Things get dark, really dark but it’s a hundred times better.

Daredevil Frustrated

Gone are the pantomime costumes, over the top set-pieces and cheesy one-liners. In their place comes a dark and gritty aesthetic, fully-rounded characters and a plot that has the potential to create something special, a shared Marvel TV universe.

Charlie Cox’s performance as Matt Murdock is perfectly judged because he’s equally adept at playing the suave lawyer by day and the ass-kicking vigilante by night but the supporting characters are just as strong, especially the villain Vincent D’Onofrio.

The violence is brutal – bones break and flesh gets ripped – but all this action is meaningless unless you care for the characters.

Daredevil Smile

Plot is never sacrificed for a set-piece and while most superheroes’ first steps are shaky, this debut season is incredibly assured. Dont think about it, go dance with the devil.

2) It’s almost like : Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy meets The Wire.

3) It’s worth your time because: Marvel have rarely taken a step wrong when it comes to developing their own properties, their output is almost akin to a guarantee that you’re going to be entertained. They don’t exactly make mindless videos of cats.

Fisk Daredevil

The rights for Daredevil took a while to find their way back into the studios hands but TV fans are very lucky that they did.

Daredevil starts at a breakneck speed and it doesn’t relent.

The wonderfully choreographed action scenes definitely pack a punch but it’s the moments between the characters that stay with you longer.

Much like The Dark Knight trilogy, this is popular entertainment that’s made with intelligence, realism and passion.

4) Did you know? : Fans of the show might think that Foggy looks very familiar. That’s because he was one of the ‘Bash Brothers’ from the cult-classic, The Mighty Ducks.

5) One episode and you’re hooked : I won’t spoil the show but the second episode is worthy of a special mention.
Fight. Corridor. Incredible.

Daredevil Fight

6) If the show was a person then : It’s that person who mixes brains with brawn. You want them in your corner.
