Yes. Adam Sandler. And Oscar. In the same sentence.
When we first wrote about this movie, it was sitting high with 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
Now, a few weeks on, and with the arrival of the first proper trailer, Uncut Gems has "just" 94% on the review aggregation site.
But while those two (at the time of writing) less-than-positive reviews have put a dent in that perfect score, there has also been a groundswell of support that Sandler might actually be looking at an Oscar nomination for his performance, which is... well, considering people are saying the same thing about Jennifer Lopez, maybe 2019 is just the year of the Massive Career Turnarounds?
The trailer gives us a good glimpse of the consta-anxious state it will likely have the viewer in, much like the writer/director Safdie Brothers managed with the surprisingly brilliant Good Time, which is on Netflix right now and needs to be seen.
Uncut Gems tells the story of a charismatic New York City jeweller (Sandler), who is always on the lookout for the next big score. When he makes a series of high-stakes bets that could lead to the windfall of a lifetime, Howard must perform a precarious high-wire act, balancing business, family, and encroaching adversaries on all sides, in his relentless pursuit of the ultimate win.
You'll spot Idina Menzel and The Weeknd in the trailer too, just to really hammer home the odd nature of everything about this film, but to be honest, we're kind of totally digging it. Sandler going full Pacino? Bring it on!
Uncut Gems is released in cinemas in the States on Christmas Day this year, but has yet to have a confirmed release date for cinemas in Ireland and the UK.
