Movies & TV

21st Oct 2023

One of the best Westerns of recent years is among the movies on TV tonight

Stephen Porzio

IN A VALLEY OF VIOLENCE

It features a great ensemble cast.

Netflix has just added 12 absolutely huge movies to its library but if you need more films, here are the ones on telly this Saturday night.

The Departed – Film4 – 9pm

This Oscar Best Picture winner from director Martin Scorsese (whose new movie is in cinemas this week) sees Leonardo DiCaprio play a cop who goes undercover in a Boston mob crew run by a vicious boss (Jack Nicholson).

Co-starring Mark Wahlberg and Matt Damon, The Departed remains a modern classic – even though its producers wanted an alternate ending that would have actually ruined the movie.

Scary Movie 2 – Comedy Central – 9pm

The Exorcist and I Know What You Did Last Summer get parodied in this spoof sequel.

Color Out of Space – AMC UK – 9pm

Nicolas Cage stars in this quite good H.P Lovecraft adaptation as the patriarch of a family whose farm is struck by a meteorite that causes strange phenomena.

Forsaken – Legend – 9pm

This 2015 Canadian Western has a great cast – including Donald and Kiefer Sutherland, Brian Cox and Demi Moore – though it is not our pick for tonight.

Jaws – RTÉ2 – 9.15pm

Steven Spielberg’s breakthrough monster movie remains one of the greatest films ever made.

Bram Stoker’s Dracula – TG4 – 9.25pm

Francis Ford Coppola (The Godfather trilogy) directs this incredible adaptation of the classic vampire novel.

Dream Horse – Channel 4 – 9.25pm

This crowd-pleasing sports comedy-drama stars Damian Lewis and Toni Collette and follows the true story of Dream Alliance, a horse that raced in the Welsh Grand National.

Valley of Violence

In a Valley of Violence stars Ethan Hawke and is our pick for tonight

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel – RTÉ One – 9.30pm

This sequel to the 2011 hit starring Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy and Dev Patel, sees the latter’s character, Sonny Kapoor, pursue his dream of opening a second hotel.

Final Score – Pick – 10pm

In this action thriller, an ex-soldier (Dave Bautista) wages a one-man war against armed terrorists who take control of a packed football stadium.

Taken 2 – ITV4 – 10.30pm

The sadly not great sequel to the Liam Neeson original.

Beavis and Butt-Head Do America – Comedy Central – 10.30pm

The well-reviewed big-screen version of the cult animated comedy.

The Hummingbird Project – AMC UK – 10.50pm

Two cousins and high-frequency traders (Alexander Skarsgård and Jesse Eisenberg) go up against their old boss (Salma Hayek) in an effort to make millions in a fiber-optic cable deal in this drama thriller.

In a Valley of Violence – Legend – 10.55pm

Last but not least is our pick for tonight, which sees Ethan Hawke play a mysterious drifter in the Old West who – while travelling toward Mexico – stumbles into a town known as the “valley of violence”.

There, the drifter becomes embroiled in a dangerous feud with a local troublemaker (James Ransone), who happens to be the son of the town’s marshal (John Travolta).

Written and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Ti West (best known for his horror movies House of the Devil, Pearl and X), In a Valley of Violence also features amongst its cast Karen Gillan and Taissa Farmiga.

Released in 2016 in very few cinemas, the Western nevertheless received very positive reviews – with critics singling out its humour, performances and set-pieces for praise.

In a Valley of Violence is also available to rent Apple TV, Google Play and Rakuten TV.
