We’re very much looking forward to O’Driscoll becoming a regular part of the Off the Ball team a little later this year.

Earlier today, Newstalk revealed that they had pulled off a pretty major coup when securing the services of Ireland’s greatest ever rugby player, who hung up his boots after a distinguished career following Leinster’s RaboDirect PRO12 victory over Glasgow Warriors on Saturday evening.

After he’s had the summer off, O’Driscoll will join the Off the Ball team in September and on this evening’s show he spoke to Newstalk sports editor and Off the Ball host Ger Gilroy about how he’s looking forward to the role and went into detail about what he might bring to the party.

Although O’Driscoll did sound as if had enjoyed the post-match celebrations over the weekend (he readily admitted as much) it was really interesting to hear him elaborate on what exactly he’ll have to offer, from his opinions on former Leinster and Ireland team-mates to really in-depth stuff about the technical aspect of rugby and the science behind the game and top-level professional sport in general.

BOD also talked about how he’ll deal with retirement and the things he’s looking forward to about not having to worry about being a professional athlete any more in a 15-minute chat that’s well worth a listen.

We’d like to wish Brian all the best in his new role and can’t wait to hear him on a more regular basis. Roll on September.
