Video: John Oliver tries to explain the appeal of football to David Letterman

"3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and shame for a loss"...

“3 points for a win, 1 for a draw and shame for a loss”…

We think that there are very few topics in the world that John Oliver wouldn’t be able to cover with his unique brand of comedy, insight and unflinching honesty.

Whether he is talking about the protests in Ferguson or reading the news with Cookie Monster, the British comedian always seems to be at his persuasive best.

We always had a sneaking suspicion that football was one of Oliver’s biggest loves though and this was proven to be true when the comedian appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman to discuss why we all love the Premier League so much.

Oliver hits the nail on the head when discussing the power of the rich clubs, the imbalance of the league system and the wishful thinking that a “smaller” club can establish themselves amongst the big boys.

He may need a quick brush up on the number of teams in the Premier League though but apart from this slight error he is pretty much on the money.

We love that Letterman just can seem to wrap his head around our version of soccerball, then again we imagine that Ryan Tubridy or Pat Kenny might struggle to understand American Football also.

If you want to see more of Oliver’s witticisms on the beautiful game then his views on FIFA is well worth a watch.
