#TRAILERCHEST: Here’s the first look at VS, a British battle rap movie that will be in Irish cinemas soon

Rudi Kinsella

Two battle rap movies are coming out in the space of a few weeks.

Welcome to #TrailerChest, where we’re taking a sneak peek at the brand new trailer for VS.

Battle rap has always been a hugely important part of the hip-hop culture.

But even at that, we’re still somewhat surprised that two big battle rap movies are coming out in such a short space of time.

Last week we shared the Bodied trailer, which is an American movie that follows a college student, and what he goes through as he attempts to join a culture that feels as though he doesn’t belong.

And now we’re sharing the first trailer from VS, an English movie that seems like it’s going to follow a similar premise.

Plot’s it all about? Bodied’s trailer had a few comedic moments, whereas VS looks as though it’s going to be a far more serious affair.

It is being described as “an urban rites of passage drama set in the hostile and exciting UK rap battle scene.”

Rap fans may be concerned that it’s going to sacrifice some of the values of the culture for cinematic purposes, but a number of battle rap scenes where written by esteemed rappers Shuffle T, Eurgh, Gemini and others.

So the lyrics should be on point.

Bodied appears to be taking a very conscious, “woke” look at battle-rap as a culture, whereas VS seems to be a more generic battle rap story.

It also looks like it will deal with more than battle rap itself, as the lead character comes to terms with the fact that his mother wants to be a part of his life, years after abandoning him.

And one of the best rappers in Europe, Shotty Horroh, is playing the bad guy, so that should be incredible.

Either way, we’re pretty damn excited for it.

Cast: Jovian Wade, Ruth Sheen, Adam Rooney.

Irish release date: 19 October
