Jenna Ortega teases big changes for Wednesday season 2

Wednesday season 2

The second season of the Netflix smash hit is already hotly anticipated.

Jenna Ortega, the star of Netflix’s smash hit Wednesday, will become a producer for the show’s second season and is already teasing some big changes for the series.

Based on the iconic Addams Family character, the comedy-horror was one of the biggest TV hits of last year. Its first season revolved around the title teenager (Ortega) as she attempted to solve a murder mystery at her new private school.

Executive produced and partly directed by legendary filmmaker Tim Burton, in its third week on Netflix, the series crossed one billion hours viewed. On top of this, it spawned a devoted legion of fans, with viewers praising the show for its gloomy aesthetic, Ortega’s star-making turn as the sullen lead character and one particular dance scene.

In a conversation hosted by Variety between Ortega and Elle Fanning (The Great) – which includes some spoilers for Wednesday season one – Ortega opened up about becoming a producer on the comedy-horror’s second season and what changes she anticipates for the series going forward.

“We had already been throwing out so many ideas and I’m somebody who’s very hands-on. I want to know what’s going on and I think with a character like Wednesday, who is so beloved and such a legend, I just really didn’t want to get her wrong,” Ortega explained.

“So, I think I try to have as many conversations as possible. Really, on set, with the writers and Tim [Burton], we just all kind of would get together. We’d go through sides in the morning and decide: ‘Okay, what works and what doesn’t?’ It was naturally already very collaborative.

“So I think that in preparation for a second season, we wanted to get ahead of the curve and make sure that we could start the conversations earlier.

“They were gracious enough and cool enough to let me put the producer hat on.”

Speaking about what fans can expect from season two of Wednesday, Ortega told Fanning: “I just got a couple of the outlines for the first couple of episodes so it’s still very much coming together.

“I think we want to lean into the horror aspect of the show a little bit more.

“Because it is so lighthearted and I think a show like this with vampires and werewolves and superpowers, you don’t want to take yourself too seriously.

“So, I think that we’re kind of ditching any romantic love interest for Wednesday, which is really great.”

The Netflix star also teased the return of Gwendoline Christie’s character Larissa Weems, who was killed during the season one finale.

“Wednesday’s relationship with Weems is one of my favourites because they are very very different women and they are constantly against each other but simultaneously they both want to watch each other’s successes and support them, which is such a fascinating dynamic” she explained.

“And Gwendoline, being as talented as she is, is just really really a pleasure to work with.

“So, I’m doing everything in my power to throw the most insane plots that would possibly bring this woman back from the dead. I’m trying. It would be a shame to go on without her.

“I think we’re just going to get a lot more bolder, a lot more darker.”
