Spoilers, ok?
You might have noticed there’s a big superhero movie at at the moment. Something that has “Avengers” and “War” and maybe “Infinity” in the title.
And you’ve either already seen it five times, or desperately avoiding spoilers. And since you clicked on this link, it’s almost definitely the former. So yeah, final spoiler warning.
So, Infinity War is a pretty heavy movie, especially for a superhero sequel. Before the opening credits even role, Loki and Heimdall are slaughtered by Thanos. Halfway through, he sacrifices Gamora to get the soul stone, and then he rips the mind stone out of The Vision’s brain. And if that wasn’t enough, the end of the film once he gets all six stones together, he murders half the population of the universe – including Spider-Man, Groot, Black Panther, Dr Strange, Star Lord, and load of other heroes. It gets kind of emotional.
Of course, the as-yet untitled Avengers 4 is coming next year, and superheroes always comeback in the comics. So it’ll all be fine, right?
Erm, no. At least not according to the film’s writers, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. They gave a spoiler-filled post-mortem interview to Buzzfeed, and they had some distressing things to say.
Markus explained:
“[The deaths are] real. I just want to tell you it’s real, and the sooner you accept that, the sooner you will be able to move on to the next stage of grief.”
Wow, that’s a bummer. McFeely went on to explain that Avengers 4 won’t be simple resurrection tale, either:
“Put it this way. I think [Infinity War] is a fairly mature movie for a blockbuster. It’s got a lot of fun in it, obviously, but boy, it gets very mature. The second one is also mature. We’re going to own these choices, and hopefully surprise and delight you and get you invested. It’s by the same studio, the same filmmaking team. They were written at the same time, shot at the same time. They’re clearly connected, but they are definitely two different movies, one of which is dependent on what happened previous.”
Ok this is interesting. We’ve still got both Ant Man and The Wasp and Captain Marvel to come before the sequel, but May 2018 already looks a long, long way away.
