Stephen Porzio

not my mother

It holds an 88% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Earlier this week, JOE wrote about Prime Video adding one of 2023’s best movies to its library.

But for those wanting more films to watch, here are the ones airing on TV on Saturday evening.

Die Hard – Film4 – 9pm
A true Christmas classic.

Dumb and Dumber To – Comedy Central – 9pm
The long-awaited, not well-received sequel to the ’90s comedy starring Jeff Daniels and Jim Carrey.

The Father – Channel 4 – 9.25pm
The 2020 drama which earned Anthony Hopkins his second Oscar.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood – RTÉ One – 9.30pm
Tom Hanks is Mister Rogers in this excellent biographical drama.

Jackie Brown – Dave – 9.40pm
One of Quentin Tarantino’s best? Discuss.

not my mother

Hazel Doupe in You Are Not My Mother – our TV movie pick for tonight

Gringo – RTÉ Two – 10pm
David Oyelowo gives a fun lead performance is this unremarkable but watchable crime comedy.

Game of Death – ITV4 – 10.05pm
A direct-to-DVD action flick with Wesley Snipes.

Northern Soul – TG4 – 10.05pm
This drama tells the story of two teenagers in ’70s England whose lives are changed forever by the discovery of African-American soul music and the dance culture that grew up around it in Britain.

Pet – LegendXtra – 10.55pm
In this twisty horror, a woman (Ksenia Solo) is abducted by a stalker (Lost’s Dominic Monaghan) and held captive underneath an animal shelter where her captor works.

Mom and Dad – Legend – 11pm
This well-reviewed comedy-horror sees a teenage girl and her younger brother trying to defend themselves against their mom (Selma Blair) and dad (Nicolas Cage) after a mass hysteria of unknown origin causes parents to turn violently on their own kids.

Serenity – Pick – 11pm
Everything about Serenity should have worked – it is a noir thriller from the creator of Peaky Blinders starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway and Diane Lane.

And yet, it was a critical and commercial failure and was regarded by some as being among the worst films released in 2019.

Nurse Betty – Comedy Central – 11.15pm
A critically acclaimed 2000 black comedy starring Renée Zellweger, Chris Rock, Greg Kinnear and Morgan Freeman.

Clear and Present Danger – Channel 4 – 11.25pm
Harrison Ford’s second outing as CIA man Jack Ryan.

You Are Not My Mother – Film4 – 11.40pm
Last but not least is our pick for tonight – this 2021 Irish horror about a teenager (Hazel Doupe) whose mother briefly goes missing before returning with a radically changed personality.

The feature debut of writer-director Kate Dolan (Kin), You Are Not My Mother’s dread-inducing atmosphere – along with the way it uses the horror genre to explore everyday human struggles – led to JOE dubbing it upon its release “arguably the greatest Irish horror movie ever made”.

Boasting a Rotten Tomatoes score of 88%, You Are Not My Mother is also available to rent on Apple TV, Google Play, Rakuten TV and the Sky Store. Check out its trailer right here:
