The crowd-pleasing comedy-drama holds a 95% Rotten Tomatoes score.

Just a week after coming out in cinemas, the already much-loved Irish musical comedy drama Flora and Son is now available to stream on Apple TV+.

From writer-director John Carney (Once, Sing Street), the movie follows a single mom named Flora (Bad Sisters’ Eve Hewson), who is at a loss about what to do with her rebellious teenage son, Max (newcomer Orén Kinlan).

After Max has a run-in with the Gardaí, Flora is encouraged to find her son a hobby.

Discovering an old guitar in a skip, she believes that music may be the answer and winds up seeking the services of an LA-based online guitar teacher (Joseph Gordon-Levitt).

Also starring Jack Reynor as Max’s father, Flora and Son has been getting an incredible international response – something JOE discussed with Carney in an interview ahead of the film’s release.

In fact, given the Oscar success that was Carney’s breakthrough film Once, as well as Flora and Son already being praised as a crowd-pleasing favourite, some have suggested we could be hearing about the latter when awards season rolls around.

Currently sitting on a whopping 95% Rotten Tomatoes score, here is a sample of some of the acclaim Flora and Son has been receiving from critics.

ABC News: “Blending the hilarious and heartfelt, the tough and the tender, John Carney’s sweerheart of an Irish musical is a treasure you’ll want to hold close.”

Empire Magazine: “A love story, but not in the way you think. Carney’s latest ballad to the musical arts stays in tune, with a stand-out central performance from Hewson.”

The Guardian: “A hard film to resist.”

Harper’s Bazaar: “An old-school, old-fashioned and beautiful telling of a long-distance romance, but not without something new to say on kinships built in the digital age. This beautiful film will make your heart sing.”

RogerEbert.com: “With great performances, catchy tunes, and light-on-its-feet filmmaking that’s much harder than it looks, Flora and Son is delightful.”

Wall Street Journal: “Heart and soul — those two concepts beaten to death by lyricists — suffuse every scene of this modest, perfect picture.”
