And the greatest Irish album ever, according to Phantom, is…

JOE

While it probably wouldn’t have been the first album that sprang to mind, it’s a bloody great choice by Phantom’s listeners.

For the last while the good folks at Phantom 105.2 have been asking their listeners to tell them their favourite Irish albums. And today they finally completed the countdown from 50 to 1, thus revealing the winner.

For once, a U2 album didn’t get the nod. Bono and the lads had to make do with number 2 courtesy of Achtung Baby. My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless was Number 3, while the likes of The Joshua Tree (4), Astral Weeks (5), Ash’s 1977 (7) and Lizzy’s Jailbreak (8) were all present and correct.

But top spot went to the often overlooked, at least until today, Heartworm by Whipping Boy.

Released in 1995, it’s an album that we know we will be digging out this week.

Until then, have a listen to the classic ‘We Don’t Need Anybody Else’ from it. Class.

The full list will be up on the Phantom site soon.

LISTEN: You Must Be Jokin’ with Aideen McQueen – Faith healers, Coolock craic and Gigging as Gaeilge
