JOE’s Song Of The Day #867 – Callum Orr ‘You Are A Place I Used To Live’

Dave Hanratty

Callum Orr Song Of The Day

Soothing winter-tinted sounds, you say?

January is a never-ending month. It literally never ends. We must accept this.

A good way of getting through the void is music, though. In a shocking turn of events, it’s been a decent month for tunes with new albums from the likes of Bombay Bicycle Club, Wolf Parade and Selena Gomez all worth investing time in.

On the home front, we look to Callum Orr and ‘You Are a Place I Used to Live’, lead-off track from his recently arrived Cathy & Places EP.

It’s a soulful, soothing offering that builds in both momentum and personnel as strings and a cluster of musicians – including the great Ailbhe Reddy – happen along to help the song soar accordingly.

“I have a love of room sounds in the production process, so for every session, we had a mic placed pointing outside the open window to capture the sound leaving the room and the sounds of the garden outside,” Orr notes.

“Capturing the atmosphere of the room was important to me.I wanted this EP to feel like you’ve walked into the studio and are standing there beside me.”

You can hear if he was successful below. If you’re into it, be sure to catch Callum alongside a nine-piece band at Dublin’s Unitarian Church this Saturday 1 February.

Tickets priced €15 are available via Eventbrite.
