Irish sensation CMAT nominated for Mercury Music Prize

Ronan Calvert

Some deserved recognition for CMAT.

Irish country-pop singer-songwriter CMAT has been nominated for the prestigious Mercury Prize by music experts in the UK.

The Meath woman’s 2023 album ‘Crazymad’ earns the nomination after being received brilliantly by fans and critics since its release.

The ‘I Wanna Be A Cowboy, Baby’ star was also up for the RTE Choice Music prize last winter but missed out to Lankum, an Irish alt-trad band who themselves were nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2023.

Fonataines D.C. earned a nomination for the same prize in 2019; that was following the release of their pivotal debut album ‘Dogrel’.

To win the award, CMAT will have to fend off stiff competition like pop-culture icon Charlie XCX and her instant classic album ‘Brat’, as well as hot new acts like ‘Last Dinner Party’ and ‘English Teacher’.

Dance acts Barry Can’t Swim and Nia Archives are also among the nominees, as is ex-Portishead vocalist Beth Gibbons who released her solo record ‘Lives Outgrown’ earlier this year.

Reacting to the news on X, CMAT gave a typically humourous response.

The 28-year-old entertained her loyal fanbase by posting: ‘The M in CMAT stands for Mercury Prize’ – a post which now has almost 2,000 likes on the platform.

We look forward to hearing what she has to say if she goes to win the whole thing.
